How To Create A Yard That Is Suitable For Bees

Posted on March 28, 2023 By Editor Kim No Comments on How To Create A Yard That Is Suitable For Bees

We will all die when the bees do. Bees are essential to our survival. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to grow enough food to feed everyone, and many people would starve. Sadly, many of the ways we farm and garden now put bees in danger and are quickly leading to the end of bees and the food they provide for all living things. The good news is that you can help the bee population by building a garden that bees will like.

Which Plant Should I Plant In My Garden To Grow Bees?

During the waking up and wintering periods, your garden should be planted with things that will provide them with food.

You Can Grow Flowers That Bees Will Love

Near your garden, plant a patch of wildflowers in your yard. For the best results, visit a plant nursery near you and look for wildflower mixes made with native wildflowers. Planting patches of wildflowers is a great way to reduce how much of your yard you need to mow while also giving bees, butterflies, and other important pollinators something to eat.

You Can Grow Herbs To Get Bees

Herbs are valuable plants that help us in many ways, from adding flavor to our food to soothing skin creams and teas. Just as these flowering herbs help the bee population recover and become stronger than ever, they also help us live longer and better lives.

Bee Balm

Bee balm is a herb that tastes sweet and smells like bergamot oranges. Bee balm is naturally antimicrobial and is often used to treat viruses that cause colds and flu. To relieve sore throats and promote relaxation for the ill, beem balm produces a fantastic relaxing tea that may be given with a little homemade honey.

Goldenrod

Goldenrod has bunches of bright yellow flowers. This flowering herb draws bees because it has a lot of nectar, which keeps them returning. This herb is great for healing and often treats pain and swelling. Goldenrod can be made into a tea to ease aches and pains or put on the skin to treat skin problems. Goldenrod is a great plant to grow in your medicinal garden to attract bees.

Calendula

I like to plant calendula in my garden, often known as pot marigolds. Mosquitoes like to bite us when we spend summer nights outside, but these flowers keep them away. While they keep bugs from biting us, they also keep aphids and other common pests away from our garden.

Calendula is also a good herb to add to my collection of medicinal herbs to make skin creams and teas that help with stress. Even fresh summer salads can be made with calendula. At the same time, they will bring bees and butterflies to your garden.

Lavender

Many people overlook this important medicinal herb when it comes to taking care of bees. Lavender is one of the most useful herbs in your garden because it can be used in many ways. Lavender’s small purple flowers and strong, elegant scent attract bees while keeping mosquitoes away from your garden and other outdoor areas where you like to hang out.

Vegetables

Planting flowering vegetables and letting them grow flowers is a great way to get bees to visit your vegetable garden while still growing a lot of food for your family. Beans and peas, which have a lot of flowers, are great additions to your garden if you want to attract bees. Bees will come to your vegetable garden if you plant onions, garlic, and almost any fruit.

Which Things Should I Not Use In My Garden?

Don’t put poisonous chemicals in your garden to kill pests. The main reason bees are endangered right now is because of these pesticides. The best way to help bees is to give them safe plants to get nectar from that won’t kill them or the other bees in their home.

Don’t purchase plants from large box retailers that import them from other regions of the nation. Because plants have to be moved from one state to another, they are sprayed with heavy pesticides that hurt bees and don’t wash off to make the plants safer. Instead, buy your plants from a local nursery or start your own from heirloom seeds.

How Can I Assist The Bees That Visit My Garden?

As fall comes, many gardens stop growing flowers at the same time that the bees need sugar to make the food that will keep them alive all winter. You can help these bees by putting out cut-up fruit in your garden. This can also help bring bees to your garden in the spring when there aren’t many flowers yet. Bring bees to your garden by putting out fresh berries or sliced melons.

People also often build a bee house for solitary bees that don’t live in hives to invite them into their gardens. If you chose this option, you would build it yourself from things you find in your yard or the woods. Avoid using treated wood at retail shops since many treatments might sicken bees.
